Dishwasher Repair Tips

If the dishes are not getting clean...

  • Make sure the water is hot enough. It should be at least 140 degrees, which is hot enough to burn you - VERY HOT! If it is not hot enough, turn the hot water heater thermostat up to a higher setting.
  • Make sure the lower spray arm is unobstructed and turning freely.
  • Make sure the bottom inside the dishwasher is clean and free of debris.
  • Make sure you are following the proper loading procedures. Use the proper amount of detergent and make sure the detergent is fresh (check expiration or "best if used by" date.
  • Mold may grow in your dishwasher if you use it infrequently. The mold can be removed by using the normal dishwasher detergent and running the dishwasher, preferably without any dishes.

If the door isn't closing...

  • Make sure the latch assembly is unrestricted and latching properly. Make sure nothing is blocking the door from opening and closing properly.

If the unit is leaking...

  • Make sure you are following the proper loading procedures, including proper type and amounts of detergents. Run the unit through cycle while empty - if it doesn't leak, it's probably a loading problem.
  • Make sure the racks are positioned properly.
  • Make sure the door is unrestricted around the opening.

Dishwasher User Tips

  • Some items are not designed for dishwasher use.
  • Lead Crystal can be irreversibly damaged if put in the dishwasher.
  • Your dishwasher may discolor aluminum pots or pans.
  • The chemicals in your dishwashing detergent may damage pan coating; such as that found on saucepans.
  • Never put antiques in the dishwasher, as the hot water and chemicals will fade or eat away at glaze.
  • Sterling silver and pewter will dull in the heat of the dishwasher.
  • Your dishwasher is likely to rust cast iron.
  • Anything soiled by wax, cigarette ash or anything toxic should not be put in the dishwasher as it will contaminate the rest of the load.
  • Any glued items, such as some cutlery handles or wooden cutting boards may melt in the heat of the dishwasher.
  • Always make sure your plastic items are dishwasher safe.
  • Dishwashers should only be used to wash normal household items, cutlery, kitchenware, cups etc. When in doubt, wash it by hand.
